Christians and Cultural Power: Where is America Headed?
Annual Fall Guest Lecture by Andy Crouch, M.Div. - Senior Fellow of the International Justice Mission Institute, and contributing editor at Christianity Today
[Presentation followed by Q&A ]
Time: 12:00 - 1:00PM
Place: Huntsman Hall, Room F95 (38th and Locust Walk)
Sponsored by: Penn Faculty-Staff Christian Forum, Wharton Christian Fellowship, and Penn Graduate Christian Fellowship
Description: What is the true extent and nature of Christian cultural power in the United States? Is America at risk of becoming a "theocracy," as some fear? Or is Christian cultural influence fading into oblivion, as others fear? The week before midterm elections is an especially apt time to look at the forces deeper than politics that are shaping American life and the contri-butions, for better and for worse, of people of Christian faith in our cultural institutions. In order to answer these questions we will survey the history of Christians and cultural power in America, contrasting the dominance of Christian influence in the late nineteenth century with the waning of such influence in the mid-twentieth century. From there we hope to estimate the likely course of Christian cultural influence in future decades and consider how this cultural power can be abused, or wisely exercised.
Andy Crouch is a contributing editor at Christianity Today, a member of the editorial board of Books & Culture, and a senior fellow of the International Justice Mission’s I.J.M. Institute. Previously he was a campus minister at Harvard University for ten years with Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship. Andy studied classics at Cornell University and received an M.Div. summa cum laude from Boston University School of Theology. A classically trained musician, he lives in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania where his wife Catherine is a professor of Physics at Swarthmore College. He keeps a writing archive and information on his forthcoming book, Culture Makers, at www.culture-makers.com.

Jewish-Christian Intercommunity Event
"Where Jesus Walked: Mapping the ties between Christians, Jews, and the State of Israel"
Featured Speaker: Rev Malcolm Hedding, Director of the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem
Time: 7:30 - 8:30PM
Place: Houston Hall, Golkin Room (2nd floor)
Description: One of Penn's first Jewish-Christian Intercommunity events in over 10 years... Rev. Malcolm Hedding, Director of the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, has been invited to share the story behind the ICEJ, his personal involvement and his passion for Israel as a believer.
In 1980, Christian supporters of Israel established the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem as a practical expression of the desire of believers throughout the world to bless and comfort Zion.
The Embassy opened after the international community condemned Israel for declaring united Jerusalem the "eternal and indivisible capital" of the reborn Jewish state. As 13 nations moved their embassies from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv due to a threatened Arab oil embargo, 1400 Christians from 40 countries decided to open their own Embassy in Jerusalem. It was an act of solidarity with the Jewish people's 3000-year-old connection to their holy city.
Today, Christians everywhere have an Embassy representing them in Jerusalem, an effective channel for their concern and love for Israel.

Dr. Drew Trotter
[Presentation followed by Q&A ]
Time: 7:00PM
Place: University Museum, Harrison Auditorium (34th St. Entrance)

Description: Who determines meaning? How important is it to tie the meaning of a text to its author's intent? When the medium switches from a book to a film, for example, how crucial is it to remain true to the author's vision? Can fiction be real? The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, C.S. Lewis's Narnia volume which is certain to be a mega-blockbuster movie this December 9th, provides a fascinating test case for answers to these questions.

Penn Veritas Forum Day 2
Meaning and the Movies: What the 5 Academy Award Nominees for Best Picture Tell Us About Ourselves
Dr. Drew Trotter
Special luncheon for university faculty and staff
[Presentation followed by Q&A ]
Time: 12:00PM
Place: Houston Hall, Hall of Flags (lower level)
Price: Free
Description: Movies dominate our office conversation; our presidents quote them when describing foreign policy; our preachers regularly use them for crucial sermon illustrations. Movies are as significant an art form as we have in America today, and the art of a people is perhaps the best barometer of the character and concerns of a people. If that is so, then Hollywood¹s self-selected movies may well be, in the long run, the most influential movies made that year, rather than those that have their day in the short run of an annual box-office take. We will look at the five Academy Award Nominees for Best Picture last year (The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Million Dollar Baby, Ray, and Sideways) and analyze what they have to tell us about America today.
What is the Real Meaning of Sex?
Frederica Mathewes-Green
[Presentation followed by Q&A ]
Time: 12:00PM
Place: Houston Hall, Hall of Flags (lower level)
Price: Free
Description: Debates about sexual morality usually swing back and forth between conflicting claims of absolute freedom and claims of absolute morality. What happens if we step back from such conclusions, however, and look for clues in the physical nature of sex itself? What makes us different than the animals? What is the real meaning of sex, for real human beings?
November 9, Wednesday
Penn Veritas Forum Day 1
Meaning and Significance: A Personal Journey
Dr. William Edgar
[Presentation followed by Q&A ]
Time: 7:00PM
Place: Houston Hall, Bodek Lounge
Price: Free
Description: Who and what define significance and meaning? Growing up in Paris, Bill Edgar developed three passions, each of which provided skills and confidence which would be tested when he entered Harvard in 1962. Those three were French literature, soccer, and music. His agnostic quest for reality, authenticity and meaning through his favorite existentialists, Sartre and Camus, was coolly received by his instructors of advanced French literature. His first varsity soccer season started out with great promise, but did not end that way. And the freshman who had found a world of meaning in jazz was jolted by a professor who questioned whether any music had meaning. None of these proved devastating and life in Cambridge was stimulating, but something was missing. What was it? Clues came from a Gen Ed humanities course at Harvard, a Christian professor, and from L'Abri-an extraordinary community in Switzerland. There, he and many students of the 1960's discovered a view of human existence which was realistic but hopeful, fresh yet timeless.
